Lecture “Typologies of Transformation” at UIBK Architecture Theory

Jan 22, 2025 Innsbruck, AT

Guest crit at Innsbruck Studio “Stranger Theories” by Giacomo Pala and Tim Altenhof.

Strange(er) Transformations / Theories: The 3rd-year studio at Innsbruck’s Architecture Theory Institute architekturtheorie.eu, led by Giacomo Pala and Tim Altenhof pushes the boundaries of architectural pedagogy again with this year’s "Stranger Theories" challenging students to engage with seminal works of 20th-c. architecture, and reinterpret them ideologically through six key theoretical lenses – Le Corbusier's Five Points, Robert Venturi's Complexity and Contradiction, Bernard Tschumi's Disjunction, Greg Lynn's The Fold, Rem Koolhaas's Junkspace, and Valerio Olgiati's 'Non-referential' A. The analytical phase, which delved into works by architects such as Aalto, Le Corbusier, Loos, Siza Vieira, Bolles & Wilson, Graves, Rossi, H&deM , Ambasz, Charles and Ray Eames, Sanaa et al, was as illuminating as it was rigorous ... unpacking the spatial foundations of these works, shedding light on the diverse architectural approaches of the 20th century … Equally compelling was the transformative phase, where students reimagined these architectural landmarks through the prism of theoretical frameworks devised by the texts by still practicing architects. This dual exercise of analysis and reinterpretation proved to be not just a technical challenge but a profoundly intellectual one, prompting critical questioning of both historical precedents and contemporary discourses. The resulting models and representations were exemplary—demonstrating both conceptual depth and meticulous craftsmanship.

Congratulations to all the students for their exceptional work and to the studio leads for orchestrating such an expansive and thought-provoking exploration of architectural transformation. The studio serves as a reminder of the importance of intellectual rigor, creative reinterpretation, and critical engagement in architectural education.
